Time Capsule 1900: Colorado Springs A Century Ago

A Step Back in Time
I am a Californian planning to retire to Colorado Springs in four years. I have been reading as much as I can about my new home and this book is fabulous! I love history and this book highlights the Springs a century ago with anecdotes, personal stories, photographs, and a glimpse of life in the past. The best part for me was learning about the Century Chest that the residents of the Springs in 1900 left for the residents in the year 2000. The chest is supposed to be opened on January 1, 2001 and I'm planning to be there!

To Walk in Wilderness: A Rocky Mountain Journal

Gorgeous alpine landscape photography
If this is the book I think it is -- I believe I read it cover to cover a couple of years ago -- it is an absolutely beautiful book. The author and photographer went into the Snowmass-Maroon Bells wilderness areas of Colorado for 4 weeks, llamas carrying their loads (which I think included a view camera, so the load was considerable). The result is a book filled with jaw-dropping mountain photography -- sunrise, sunset, alpine meadows sprinkled with lakes and snowfields, wildflowers and crystal-clear skies. If you love high places, you'll love this book.

Touring Colorado Hot Springs (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (June, 1999)
Author: Carl Wambach
Average review score:

A Complete and Concise Hot Springs Guide
As a Colorado resident I have been fortunate to have visited several of the larger, more popular area hot springs. My search for new hot springs experiences led me to Wambach's "Touring Colorado Hot Springs." This book is well organized and lists the springs according to the region of Colorado where they are found. The included maps are clear and easy to read. Especially helpful information I found to be the "Best Secluded Locations", "Best Family Locations" and "Best Character Locations" section of the book. I found this book so good that I have now ordered 4 more copies to give as gifts.

Colorado For Free!
What a wonderful idea! The tours in this book are really entertaining and even better, they are free. This is the kind of book that gets you off the couch. My kids might not have been too excited when they saw the plain black and white pages, but we went on some tours, and now they love looking through it and picking the next weekend trip. I appreciate how well Jodi describes the tours, so I know exactly what to expect. I'm definately looking forward to taking free tours in other states when I've finished with Colorado.

Out of Print??? What a Shame
Having recently moved to Colorado Springs from Dallas TX I was looking for a hiking guide for the local area. A co-worker is an avid hiker/camper and let me borrow Zoltan's book...I LOVED IT!!! There is great information on hiking trails including difficulty level, trail distance, what you can expect to see on your hike and much more.

A Traveler's Guide to the Geology of the Colorado Plateau
Published in Paperback by Univ of Utah Pr (Trd) (June, 2002)
Author: Donald L. Baars
Average review score:

A Roadside Geology on steriods
This is another of Donald Baars' series of excellent geology books. Centered on the Four Corners, the Colorado Plateau displays some of the most varied and spectacular geology found anywhere.

To make reading and understanding easier, the author divides the Plateau into seven smaller units, e.g. the Paradox Basin. Each section begins with an explanation of its geologic history then identifies every rock formation seen along what appears to be every road that crosses it. This latter is done at a level of detail I've seen only one other place (Roadside Kansas by Buchannan and McCauley).

If you enjoy knowing just what you're looking at when you drive through this area or, like me, have a developed a hobby of collecting rock samples, this is a marvelously useful book.
